perpetual vessels
In perpetual vessels a group of 8 women and non-binary performers took over the, W.T. Preston, the last functioning “sternwheeler” in the Puget Sound. The boat was manned by crews who removed log jams and natural debris that prevented navigation on the bays, harbors and tributary rivers. Together we worked with the memories and histories of a space that was traditionally occupied exclusively by men, and we reimagined it with our own bodies and identities. We invited Anacortes residents to join us on a day of the shoot. Together we created the image you see towards the end of the film, a never-ending line of humans wrapping around the entire ship like a snake. This is an ulterior attempt to experiment with different ways of engaging local communities with our work, so they can be active participants and co-creators in a way that allows them to feel more deeply connected to and invested in our work.
