Material Deviance in Contemporary American Culture
This piece takes a sideways look at our object-based reality. Reflecting stuff-centered culture back to ourselves, it passes through shame, nostalgia, patriotism and the weight of inheritance. It asks: do objects imbued with so much worth take over and take on a life of their own? Tis cluttered landscape expands like a hoarder’s collection and contrasts like an immigrant’s suitcase. It breathes like capitalism, filling an existential void whose appetite is endless. Material Deviance helps us uncover what’s buried under the steep piles in our lives. As part of the project people were invited to a community ritual where they could add objects and stories to the set.
